I am a Professor of Philosophy at King's College London and the Treasurer of the Mind Association. I am also one part of various philosophical collaborations like ‘Nowak & Michaelson’, ‘Michaelson & Cohen’, ‘Radulescu & Michaelson’, and ‘Pepp, Sterken, & Michaelson’. I work mostly on philosophy of language, though sometimes I also like to think about color, Frege, animal ethics, skills, manipulation, and various other things. So, basically, I'm interested in philosophy.
From 2026-2029 I will be a Leverhulme Major Research Fellow, working on a book on the line between animal signaling and human meaning. For too long we have been left to wonder what separates us from our primate cousins. Now it is time to finally get to the bottom of things.
Occasionally, I also do some non-academic philosophy. Together with my friends Rachel Sterken and Jessica Pepp, I wrote a short and hopefully relatively accessible piece on fake news here. And a very long time ago I made a series of videos on philosophy with the actor James Franco. Those can be found here.
